Coffee and Seattle…a Tough Combo to Beat!
Living in Seattle also gave Jim an appreciation for excellent coffee. In the nineties, Seattle was famous for two things: grunge bands and coffee. One of Jim’s favorite things to do, whether rocking out or wired in, was to explore Seattle’s many cafes and coffee shops. He always sought opportunities to try different blends and expand his palette.

It was discovered in Ethiopia in the 1930s and brought to Panama a couple of decades later in the fifties. The first to plant Geisha coffee in Panama did so in Buquete’s fertile soil, high in the mountains of the Chiriquí province.
Geisha Coffee Panama remained a hidden treasure for half a century, known only to a few connoisseurs like Jim. However, in 2004, the Esmeralda Coffee farm unveiled its Geisha Coffee in the Best of Panama competition. It shattered records with a remarkable 94.1 rating. This unprecedented achievement sent shockwaves through the coffee industry, elevating Geisha Coffee Panama to unparalleled prestige.
With this unprecedented rating, Geisha Coffee Panama practically took the coffee world by storm overnight. The growing demand quickly made it one of the world’s most expensive coffees. That popularity also inspired other growers to do more with their Geisha plants and explore other flavors they could produce.
The coffee’s popularity also led to many farms attracting tourists to see where this exceptional coffee comes from. Its high price benefitted farmers by providing them the resources to invest in more sustainable growing practices.
