Patrick and Jessica had a good life in Seattle. Both were university-educated, and Patrick owned a small tech firm, while Jessica made a good living selling real estate, primarily on Queen Anne Hill. Their 10-year-old son did well in school, and their combined salaries allowed them to live comfortably. And yet, after enduring years of what felt like constant rain, eating in the same restaurants, and seeing the same sights, they started to feel stuck. Could they have a life in Panama?

Looking for Something New

They became interested in working internationally, exploring different cultures and traditions, and discovering natural landscapes. Patrick, through his tech contacts, and Jessica, through her contacts in real estate, both heard that people were finding all those opportunities in Panama.

But Panama was a long way from Seattle, and with a child at home and roots planted deep in the Pacific Northwest, the challenge of uprooting everything to move to a foreign country seemed like too onerous a burden to bear. And yet, something was intriguing about applying their entrepreneurial experience in a totally new environment. What better way to do that than to move to a country with no taxes, a growing economy, and a culture waiting to be explored?

It Was Time for Research

Before committing to a trip, Patrick and Jessica researched by checking out testimonials of expats and retirees living in Panama. These testimonials revealed many benefits and perks of visiting and living in Panama, including the growing economy, vast opportunities for business owners, excellent healthcare and infrastructure, and unmatched natural beauty just waiting to be explored.

One common theme they saw throughout the testimonials was expats encouraging people to immerse themselves in the local culture and customs. Also, since they were both self-employed, they could easily relocate their businesses to Panama and enjoy the tax haven and American income while living in Panama’s lower cost of living.

Seeing Is Believing

Based on these testimonials, Patrick and Jessica traveled to Panama to scope it out. Immediately they met expats who extolled the country’s beauty and its people. They met fellow entrepreneurs who had found success living in Panama. Most were living luxurious lifestyles that would have been difficult to attain in the U.S. They also met local citizens who welcomed them with open arms and delighted in showing them restaurants, shops, parks, and beaches that make life in Panama so enjoyable.

After attending several local festivals and parades, Patrick and Jessica felt like they had “found their crew.” It was clear they were ready to move their businesses to Panama.

From the Mouth of Babes

The only person they had to convince was their son. He didn’t want to leave his home or his friends behind. Patrick and Jessica convinced him that moving to Panama would be a great adventure. They showed him videos of them traversing the jungle, and he saw the amazing wildlife that is common there. Suddenly, moving to Panama seemed like a fun idea.
